Two hours later, Carrie and Jessica left House of Fashion loaded down with shopping bags. Among their purchases was a dress for Carrie’s Sweet Sixteen.

“Do you think I made the right choice?” Carrie nervously asked.

“That dress was made for you!” Jessica raved. “I can’t wait to see you in it when your hair and make-up is all done.”

The first dress Carrie had tried on had been a red strapless bubble dress with a front twist. It was cute and definitely made for partying. The second dress was a chocolate brown satin gown with an origami-ish folded bustier. It was super sophisticated and elegant, but felt a little too grown-up. It was also hard to walk in!

The third dress had been the one. It was a long aquamarine sheath with a pleated bodice and crisscross back. As soon as Carrie slipped into it and saw herself in the mirror, she knew.

This was the dress.

And then there were the shoes!

Carrie had found a to-die-for pair of black crocodile embossed cage platform heels.

Meanwhile, Jessica had made out like a bandit. She’d bought a long daisy print skirt, diamond cut leggings, a patterned purple skirt and a large pink leather hobo bag.

And it was all 75% off!

Not to mention that everything they bought had already been marked down!

“I have an idea,” Jessica said once they had collapsed on the train headed back to North Ridge.

“What?” Carrie asked as she handed their tickets to the passing conductor.

“Let’s stop by Gretchen’s and show her what we bought.”

The idea excited Carrie. She couldn’t wait to show Gretchen her dress and hear what she thought. Maybe they could even test out different hairstyles and make-up.

“Okay.”

But when they arrived at Gretchen’s house, her mother told her she wasn’t home.

She was out.

With Brittany.

“Why don’t we give her a call?” Jessica suggested as they walked back down to the sidewalk. “Maybe she could swing by your house on her way home.”

A disappointed Carrie shook her head. “No, it can wait.”

“Are you sure?”

“Let’s not bother her.” Carrie checked the time on her watch. It was after four. “Besides, I have to start getting ready for my date with Oliver tonight.”

“Your first official date as boyfriend and girlfriend!” Jessica happily squealed. “Are you looking forward to it?”

“You bet,” Carrie honestly answered.

And she was.

Oliver was her boyfriend.

Sweet, thoughtful Oliver.

Not Cole!

He knew she had a boyfriend and yet he had still tried to kiss her.

How rude!

What kind of guy went after another guy’s girl?

On the train ride back home, she had vowed she wasn’t going to think about Cole anymore. And she was going to stick to the decision she had made last night and never be alone with him again.

“I can’t wait to see Oliver tonight!”
